Effects of Flea Beatles and Poor Irrigation on Tom

Tom’s in trouble. Perhaps I should have seen it coming. Why? Well let me explain.

First there was the infestation of flea beetles. These are some real nasty little buggers. To start with, there hard to spot. I didn’t even know they were there until the leaves on Tom started to look like swiss cheese. By then, it was almost too late. I hit the Net and came across a couple of recipes to keep them at bay but by the time they were ready, most of Tom’s branches were yellow and falling off. Nevertheless, I applied the home made pepper spray and with in a few days the incident had passed.

With the flea beetles taken care of I honestly though I was in the clear. There had been some new growth and I was very hopeful. There were a few flowers and with in couple of days, Tom was bearing fruit. Yes, fruit as in one and not fruits as in many, but still there was a tomato and I was quite content. That’s when the rain came. And came. And is still coming. I kid not, there were several days when Tom could have used a life jacket.

Now here I’ll mention that I do my gardening in a community garden. At the beginning of the season, everyone worked their plot very well and build small rows, berms if you will, on top of which they placed their plants. My wife suggested that I do the same. I did, but my heart wasn’t in it. I just didn’t see the point. I now know why this is done. It keeps your plants from drowning in the rain! Tom could have been spared.

So again, Tom has had a tough go and while he’s been down trodden don’t count him out just yet. Let’s see if he can pull through.
